The holiday of Christmas holds a special place in the hearts of many individuals who follow the Christian faith, as it commemorates the miraculous birth of Jesus Christ. As someone who has a deep appreciation for both Christianity and the field of physics, I have often encountered inquiries and questions regarding my beliefs in the virgin birth and resurrection. In an effort to provide a comprehensive response to these inquiries, I previously wrote a blog post about the concept of miracles. As I explained, as the creator and sustainer of the universe, God possesses the ultimate authority and power to bring about miracles – incredible events that are deeply meaningful and significant in the context of faith. In this light, the virgin birth and resurrection of Jesus are miracles that offer evidence of God’s presence and intervention in our world, playing an integral role in the redemption of humanity. It is therefore entirely justifiable to believe in and celebrate these monumental occurrences, which hold a particularly sacred place in Christian theology.
Within Christian circles, the term “miracle” often refers to events with a low probability, but not necessarily against the laws of physics. Nothing is impossible in physics; so-called impossible events are simply those with an extremely low probability. Elsewhere on this website, I’ve discussed how God can use quantum events to influence the physical world. A laser is powerful because all the photons are in phase and reinforce each other, unlike a regular light bulb, where they cancel each other out. In the real world, everyday objects consist of billions and billions of molecules. Miracles may happen without invalidating physical laws if God arranges all the molecules in a unique way.
In society, there are millions of individuals, each acting differently, and often cancelling each other out. If God had put the same burden in everyone’s heart every day and all Christians were working towards the same goal, impossible changes could happen. Imagine a society where people’s hearts beat in unison towards a shared goal, like molecules in divine arrangement. This collective effort, guided by God, is capable of bringing about transformative change. This vision reveals the true power of unity and faith, which transcends what may appear impossible and can bring a brighter, more harmonious reality.
As we celebrate Christmas, let’s embrace the magic of miracles, not just as extraordinary events of the past, but as a testament to the enduring hope that each of us carries within. In the symphony of faith and science, may we find inspiration to believe in the miraculous, the extraordinary and the wondrous possibilities that grace our lives.
