Karl Marx said that religion is the opium of the people. Marx believed that those in power used religion to keep the working classes in a state of false consciousness. Religion distracted people from the reality of their present lives by offering the promise of an afterlife and eternal salvation. Using similar logic, I can argue that science is the opium of Darwinists, who think that there is no purpose behind the universe. They use science to num the meaningless in the universe, giving false promises that we can use science to find the origin of life and keep them busy rather than searching for the true meaning behind the universe. What is the point of gaining knowledge if it is just the result of random events?
Suppose you ask why the kettle is boiling. I can explain the scientific process behind it, of how the electrical current turns into heating energy, which increases the temperature of the wafer molecules; since the heating element is at the bottom of the kettle, water molecules near the heating element will transit into gas form earlier, hence forming bubbles. Still, the answer can be as simple as I want to have a cup of tea, and it is the reason behind it. Looking at the mechanism behind it cannot gain us the meaning behind it.
If use further considers the scenario that you see a sign at a train station that reads “San Francisco”. It’s theoretically possible for the wind to randomly arrange the 12 letters to look like a sign; if you’re heading to San Francisco, you understand that the sign isn’t there by chance but has meaning behind it. Even when something can be explained by chance, a designer is likely involved if there’s meaning behind it.
In fact, neither science nor religion is the opium of the people; both have a lot to offer to mankind. They should work together hand in hand to bring forth a better understanding of God and the world around us.
Most scientists I know don’t take the anti-Christian stand. In fact, most of them believe in some form of “God”. I hope this website can help them to gain insights that the “God” that exists is a loving God and care deeply for them. God has a purpose for every one of them, and they can put their trust in Him.
